floral trends & ideas for 2017

Hanging Flowers

The gorgeous wedding table flowers I recently spotted on the equally gorgeous, Style And The Bride, inspired me to write this. Flowers, in my opinion, are integral to any breathtakingly beautiful wedding day. Take the cover image for this piece as an example; it’s the flowers that transform this from a “table” into a “wedding table”. I don’t believe you can style a breathtakingly stunning wedding without fantastic florals.

Now, although I’ve been known to dabble with the occasional arrangement, I am no florist. I do, however, spend a good deal of my time looking at floral arrangements, talking with brides-to-be about them and working alongside florists. So, I feel fairly qualified and definitely passionate enough to write about my top 3 favourite wedding flower ideas and trend predictions for 2017.

Suspended florals

There is something so amazing about walking into a room with flowers literally dripping from the ceiling. Acclaimed florist, Jay Archer creates some brilliant installations; I was witness to the whole process at a wedding this summer and it is quite something to watch! Suspended arrangements also make so much practical sense if, like me, you prefer a more social dining experience and opt for sharing platters. A busy table just cannot accommodate them easily. Creating a top heavy versus table heavy focal point is one way to solve the problem and create a statement!

Green, Wild and Free

The first part of this trend is all about going “flower free”, or at least, minimal florals in favour of greenery and foliage. This is natural simplicity at its best, a locally foraged, wild, trailing, organic look. With so many options in terms of shade and texture of foliage available, this look is far from dull and, in my opinion, super style led. Simplicity at its brilliant best, this trend partners really well with the movement towards less structured, looser arrangements. The slightly “un-done” look, I think, is here to stay and I welcome it!

Ceremony Arches and Backdrops

I always think it a shame when the ceremony décor and florals play second fiddle to the reception and so I am welcoming the trend for ceremony arches and backdrops. They look beautiful and create a stunning “frame” for the images of your “I dos” and that important first kiss that you’ll look back on for years to come. With many alternatives to the traditional church and so many new, unique and beautiful venues available, there is much scope for originality and opportunity to be inspired by your ceremony surroundings and décor.
