Somerley House is a historical country estate within acres of what can only be described as truly stunning grounds. Having reopened for weddings this year, it is set to become one of the sought after wedding venues in the South of England. I’m sure of it. Located a snip away from the beaches of the South Coast on the Hampshire/Dorset borders, I was lucky enough to see it in all its glory last week on a perfect, blue sky, sunny winter’s day. Somerley is the kind of venue I would have loved for my own wedding had it not closed its doors to weddings, due to a family bereavement, weeks after I got engaged. I am so pleased that after a few years hiatus, Somerley is now well and truly reopen! I’m even more pleased to be one of their recommended suppliers for 2017. Let me tell you a little about it.
Somerley House is a stunning privately owned family home and estate set within beautiful parkland. It was designed by Samuel Wyatt in 1750 and has been in the Normanton family for five generations since it was bought by the 2nd Earl in 1825. It’s fair to say it has seen it has seen a lot of history. The current owner, Lord Somerton lives there today with his wife and children and the downstairs rooms are dotted with images of family life across the ages. It is English tradition and country house at its finest.
And then I have to talk about the grounds. Driving through the gates to the estate, I had goosebumps as I approached a bend in the driveway that gave way to the most wonderful view of the house in the distance. Breathtaking is the only way that you could describe it and, on a cold but crisp, winter’s day, I could have stared at that view for hours.
With the flexibility for exclusive hire of just the house, the gardens or both, Somerley is able to accommodate various styles of wedding day. The house is steeped in history and is very English Country gentry in terms of look and feel. The views from the house are incredible and there are 9 bedrooms available for use. If you are looking for more of a blank canvas on which to put your stamp, there is almost limitless possibility for doing this by renting the grounds only and using a marquee or equivalent structure. With so much space and various gorgeous areas, including a Grade I listed walled garden with the backdrop of a 17th century folly, you are spoilt for choice. They can even incorporate their Triton Fountain into your marquee. In fact for one wedding this year, the fountain will be drained to fill with fresh flowers, can you imagine how pretty this is going to look? Whether you are looking for elegant country or luxury with a laid back feel, Somerley can accommodate.
The house only re-opened its doors this January and the website is undergoing a big redesign (due to be launched later this year). Despite this they are already taking bookings for weddings across 2017. It’s a beautiful, historical, gem of a place and one I am proud to be affiliated with.
